Well presented John! My thoughts shared with a group in South Africa:

*Haka Origins Questioned*

[29/8, 10:38] Hankie & Claudia Vogel: Dan, as our NZ connection, I am asking on the group.

(1) Is the origin of the Haka from NZ or perhaps from one of the Pasific Islands?

(2) If you from one of the islands, eg, Samoa, are you a Māori?

[29/8, 11:37] Dan: Sjoe, Hankie, the Mäori migrated those many centuries ago, from their island habitats and came across Aotearoa, the Land of The Long White Cloud. They eventually brought in more of their own and they flourished, living a simple life with virtually no predators and their own culture developed.

The Dutch and pommie explorers arrived, and after a few wars and a little cannibalism, God's word was heard, followed by a peaceful co-existence as more and more European settlers made NZ home.

The Islanders had a manner of greeting other tribes, whenever they visited other islands. The Haka was a challenge to the visitors and they would respond with their own challenge, always trying to put on a more ferocious display!

So, in answer to Question 1, yes, the Haka did originate from the Pacific Islands

Question 2 is more complex, as you will have seen, yesterday, Ardie was born in NZ to Samoan parents and considers himself Samoan. How many generations should pass before a Samoan considers himself Mãori, I don't know! It's probably a spiritual question.

I am often referred to as a Mäori boy, which I enjoy, but my Mum was from Ireland and Dad from Norway. I was born in Wellington 1951 06 02 and I am vehemently a Kiwi!

Whatever the criteria might be the trouble is that when one observers how those who most stridently identify as Maori behave and dress (see Debbie Ngarewa-Packer at Ratana)they are locked in a nineteenth century time warp from which they seem incapable of extracting themselves.

The sooner they can move into the 21st century the better for all of us but particularly them.
