Sooo many ire-inducing pearls, I don't know where to start. As for the brave Polynesians who took on the elements in search of a better life (or to avoid being eaten, take your pick) by virtue of their "knowledge of the stars and their skill in finding the rhythm of the current" (barf), how come (some of) their descendants can't even find a job? More likely they paddled out for 10 minutes, then lay back for a week letting the current carry them south. Maori wonderfulness! Ah, if we could bottle and export it, all our financial woes (thank you, Labour) would be over.

It’s a shame that all the Woke rubbish about Maori has diluted recognition of just how extraordinary the Polynesian (native Taiwanese) exploration of the Pacific Ocean was

And yet they could never manage to get past eating each other, holding revenge as the highest calling and thinking it was ok to kill their own children if that meant they were seen as more favourable by their 'man'. So if we are fair, there are a few marks on the good side of the board (some nice carvings too), but probably a few more on the wrong side. And of course this is not really the issue. The issue is that they have not yet managed to work out that looking forward and improving culture is a better choice than looking back all the time. Sadly, the grifts that you write so well about John mean that they don't really need to develop as a group. They can just sponge off everyone else for the rest of their lives. Perhaps the biggest tragedy is that they have not realised that this is kind of a shit attitude to have for life and that the wondrous joy that comes from striving and achieving will never be theirs. As much as these lifetime troughers really fuck me off with their victim mentality and perpetual whining, I am still so very grateful to have had parents that taught me the basics like work hard and you will get ahead. Sigh.

Thank you again John for your appalling revelations about Wellington. We used to love coming down to our Capital but it is hard to believe the outright corruption which your columns continually allude to. I took a look at that very expensive Library website and it was exactly as expected and very similar to The NZ Public Service https://www.publicservice.govt.nz/ website.

And I guess we can only hope that a strengthened victory for NZ First & ACT at the next election will bring about some cost-cutting measures. Someone mentioned the other day how the French used the Guillotine on their intellectuals and I saw a corollary there.......

The racist Maori Mafia thugs on steroids !

Ripping the hapless Wellington ratepayers off every minute of the day.

But they are also embedded within every council throughout New Zealand.

Embedded pretty much everywhere tbh. In every hospital there are grifters playing the race hustle. In every Govt department, there are ever more grifters refining the art of the race hustle. And on it goes. These leeches are so selfish and have no shame as they betray their children by exploiting their failures and not teaching them how to thrive.

"Another eternal bonfire of cash is the earthquake strengthening of the Town Hall, a building that should’ve been demolished long ago." Totally agree.

What is "overlooked" is that the strengthening costs were significantly and extravagantly increased by the addition of recording studios in the basement: The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) is building these facilities, supported by a $2 million donation from Sir Peter Jackson and Dame Fran Walsh.

They feature "box-in-box" construction for acoustic isolation. It involves building a completely independent inner "box" (the studio or room) that floats inside the outer building structure (the "outer box"), with no rigid structural connections between them. This decouples the inner room from external noise, vibrations, and flanking paths (sound travelling through floors, walls, ceilings, or the building frame). Of course, this is all under the Town Hall.

Council approved an additional $70–147 million, bringing the total to up to $329–330 million. This was driven by worse-than-expected ground conditions on reclaimed land (requiring extensive piling, dewatering, and foundation work), heritage complexities, and broader construction cost inflation reported Red Radio NZ.

A $330 million recording studio.

how fascinating to learn of whats happening here in NZ.

Exposure publicly and follow up on the fix , will provide us with proof that someone ,somewhere in Govt circles cares about these matters.

I recall Ben McNulty smugly proclaiming once on LinkedIn that he had read all the information on the proposed airport deal and was in favour of it. Of course he was wrong because I suspect there are street tarts who understand economics better than our esteemed councillors.

You’re doing a disservice to street tarts. Average Street urchins would also have the measure of McNumbNut
