Look a little further in South Africa to see where this leads, a collapsing economy, government corruption, lawlessness, violence, all in the name of justice, and retribution. UNDRIP is a UN General Assembly Declaration, not a treaty or convention, and therefore it is not legally binding under international law, meaning it cannot be "ratified" in the traditional sense. India supported the declaration in 2007, NZ did not. India's support was also heavily qualified; NZ subsequently endorsed UNDRIP in 2010. India has not formally implemented UNDRIP into its domestic law and nor has New Zealand. The agreement https://www.mfat.govt.nz/assets/Trade-agreements/NZ-India-FTA/Free-Trade-Agreement-between-the-Government-of-New-Zealand-and-the-Government-of-the-Republic-of-India.pdf states "India voted in favour of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples on the condition that after independence all Indians are indigenous". Those with a sense of humor could suggest that same conditions apply to all New Zealand after November 25th 1947. This was the date on which NZ adopted the Statute of Westminster Act 1931. This act meant the British Parliament could no longer legislate for New Zealand without its consent, granting full legal autonomy. The date for India was August 15th 1947. I am not a lawyer, and that is one of the reasons I read John's Substack. However, I have taken an interest in UNDRIP and the Nagoya protocol, because both impact my work. I note that the FTA is silent on the Nagoya Protocol, which India ratified in 2012, but NZ has not. The Nagoya protocol is a legally binding treaty.

The Parties agree that for India, “Indigenous Peoples” is without prejudice to India’s domestic
legal classification, and any recognition of indigenous status shall be in accordance with India’s law or policy.
...which seems to me to make a veiled exception for India's caste system. I could be wrong. But quite funny
