Mercifully, the Woke Aotearoa Revolution has stalled and is probably disintegrating.
We’ve recently got to enjoy the spectacle of Labour leader Chris Hipkins breaking Woke Ranks to criticize Green MP Tamatha Paul’s latest lunacy. Hipkins described Paul’s recent assessment of Police on the beat - “for a lot of people, it makes them feel less safe” – as “ill-informed, unwise, and stupid”.
As Woketearoa consumes itself, it’s worth ruminating – and, of course, generalizing - about what societal groups have been at the forefront of the New Zealand Resistance to Wokery. And it turns out that the “LG” (lesbian/gay) component of LGBTQI+ is in the vanguard of the Revival of Reason. Because a majority of, and many prominent, male and female New Zealand homosexuals have revolted against Woketeamania.
Students of the West’s Culture Wars must’ve noticed the determined resistance to Wokery from prominent global gay guys; the likes of Douglas Murray, Yuval Noah Harari and Stephen Fry. And also from lesbians like the formidable Camille Paglia.
But what of New Zealand gays? (I’ll use “gay” here to cover both biological male and female homosexuals.)
Ryan Bridge
Ryan Bridge is praiseworthy in the War against Woke. He’s never brought into the whole Woke Intersectionality nonsense. Bridge the Broadcaster never felt inclined or bound to broadcast his own homosexuality.
It was only in 2021 - when ex-New Zealand cricketer and media personality Mark Richardson joked on live radio that Ryan collected “ex-boyfriends” - that Bridge publicly acknowledged his sexual orientation. Bridge said at the time “It's just not at the forefront of how I describe myself. I wanted to be known as a good interviewer or a talented broadcaster before being the 'gay guy from TV’ ”. Bravo Bridge. That’s the way it should be.
Rachel Stewart
I’m a quiet fan of New Zealand journalist Rachel Stewart. If gay women can be divided into “lipstick” and “lumberjack” lesbians (which is naturally not always the case), Rachel would be on the lumberjack side. Rachel fell afoul of the State firearms folly that followed the Christchurch mosques massacre. In response to a man putting the label “grubs” on Speak Up For Women (a pro-women group opposed to the deranged notion that humans can change biological sex), Rachel tweeted:
“Is it wrong that the country girl in me wants to invite my gun-toting sisters over, strip this wee f***er naked, let him loose in the back paddock, jump on the tray of the ute, and hunt him down with spotlights while whooping & hollering & drinking?”
For that clearly-tongue-in-cheek Tweet, the Police raided Stewart’s property, confiscated Rachel’s firearms, cancelled her firearms licence and (of course) labelled her “Transphobic”. The Plods earmarked Rachel as a dangerous Transphobe. What rot.
Stephen Rainbow
Ultra-Woke media outlets Radio New Zealand and The Spinoff did their deranged darnedest to cancel admirable (& gay) new Human Rights Commissioner, Stephen Rainbow.
RNZ and the Spinoff desperately try to label Rainbow as a hater of “Trans” people and Muslims. Here’s a smattering of Rainbow’s diabolical pronouncements:
“Be careful, there's some elements of the trans agenda being sneakily promoted through this campaign.” [The “campaign” was to ban “gay conversion therapy”, the sketchy therapy designed to “convert” people to heterosexuality. Rainbow does not support gay conversion therapy, but was concerned that the campaign was being infected with damaging Trans ideology…like sexualising children, Benjamin Doyle-style. In their Woke crusading, RNZ and the Spinoff proudly and routinely ignore nuance and distort the truth.]
“Israel cannot afford a client state of Iran, intent on its destruction, on its borders, and this is what Hamas have shown will happen if a Palestinian state were to be created.” [RNZ and Spinoff naturally construed Rainbow’s entirely defensible statement as Islamophobic.]
Dan Wootton…Whoop Whoop!
Perhaps New Zealand’s most world famous anti-Woke gay guy is Dan Wootton. From humble beginnings in the Hutt Valley, Wootton is now something of a global media phenomenon. Dan the Man is a staunch critic of Megan Markle, whom he has amusingly described as “the Californian Duchess of Woke”. Wootton has defended British Royalty – Queen Elizabeth II in particular – from spurious allegations (including from Markle) of racism. Wootton has withstood swarming attacks from Wokerati Drones. Other Anti-Woke bulwarks
If good old fashioned homosexuals have been at the forefront in the War on Woke, what other sections of society might be overachieving in the culture war? Interestingly, it’s Māori people. Wokesters will try to have you believe that indigenous peoples are deeply steeped in Woke. Take this woo woo, from the What’sOnQueer website:
Today on What’s On Queer we use 2SLGBTQIA+…we’ve joined the movement to put 2S (two-spirit) at the front. The placement of "2S" at the beginning of the acronym is intended to acknowledge and honor the Indigenous roots of the term and to emphasize the importance of Indigenous perspectives and identities within the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Placing "2S" first recognizes the historical and ongoing contributions of Indigenous people to discussions about gender and sexual diversity and highlights the need for visibility and inclusion of Two-Spirit identities in these conversations.
Two-Spirit: An English term used to broadly capture concepts traditional to many Indigenous cultures. It is a culturally-specific identity used by some Indigenous people to indicate a person whose gender identity, spiritual identity and/or sexual orientation comprises both male and female spirits.
In fact, Māori are in general culturally conservative. While many Māori pretend to the Woke, it’s only because the whole Treaty of Waitangi industry is infested with Woke Pakehas. The vast majority of Māori don’t toke Woke.
I attended InflectionPoint’s UNSILENCED event at Wellington’s Tākina conference centre on 18 May 2024. I’m glad I did. The eye-opening conference was about as unWoke as it gets. Rachel Stewart spoke. So did Brain Tamaki. A Trans activist tried to throw a mixture a urine and excrement over Tamaki. The crazed zealot missed, but the stretch in the foyer was hideous. There were certainly a number of Māori Destiny Church members at the conference.
But a majority of Māori at UNSILENCED were not Destiny Churchers. They were down-the-line Māori individuals concerned about Wokery. Woke is a distinctly Western witchcraft. Any Māori wanting to reject West traditions to any degree cannot be Woke.
Furthermore, young people worldwide, including young New Zealanders, are increasingly rejecting the idiocy of Identitarianism, and generally becoming more conservative.
The Woke Rump
If New Zealand homosexuals, Māori and young people are generally rejecting Wokery, who’s fighting for Woke against the Forces of Reason? Well, for archetypal remnant Wokesters, look no further than certain women of a certain age, entrenched in New Zealand’s tertiary education system.
Women like Cecilia Tarrant. Cecilia is breaking our hearts and shaking our confidence daily, in all sorts of ways. As Auckland University chancellor, she’s orchestrated the Wokeification of that the once-august University, including implementing compulsory Māori race indoctrination for all Auckland University students. I’ve covered these tertiary education tyrants in an earlier Substack.
THE UNITED UNIVERSITIES OF AOTEAROA
“The universities have been to the nation, as the wooden horse was to the Trojans.”
Not content with unhinging Auckland Uni, Cecilia – as chair of New Zealand’s Green Investment Fund – squandered well over $100 million of that Fund’s money on Solar Zero, a Blackrock-owned solar energy company that’s gone bust. For Cecilia to have squandered that sum of our taxes on a Blackrock business venture is an unmitigated disgrace. At least Finance Minister Nicola Willis sacked Cecilia for that stupidity.
Do not go softly into this Woke fight,
Rage, rage against the lying of this Blight
John, I place you on the same pedestal that Chris Trotter occupies. You may or may not be uncomfortable, but the keyboards you sit at are equally powerful.
The revolution will devour its own, including these people as they are a product of it. They may have realised that they’re on the wrong side, but only Christ and his Church can save them from the fallen angels behind this revolution. Of themselves they can do nothing.
